Professor Fehily is a keen believer in the importance of top quality physiotherapy.
Working with specialist therapists he has designed a dedicated hip rehabilitation program for the treatment of soft-tissue hip disorders.
This was initially designed for the management of patients after hip arthroscopy (keyhole) surgery, but it has been increasingly used successfully for people pre-surgery. The program is a combination of hip strengthening and core-stability exercises, hydrotherapy and optimisation of joint movement.
Since Professor Fehily established the Manchester Hip Clinic at Spire Manchester, he has worked closely with highly trained therapists to develop the Accelerated Hip Rehabilitation Program for both hip arthroscopy and hip replacement patients. This has built on the Professor’s pre-existing program and developed the use of specialised equipment and hydrotherapy pools to speed up the recovery process.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging has revolutionised medical practice. It provides detailed images of bones, joints and soft tissues using high strength magnetic instead of radiation. It can be combined with joint injections of dye to provide non-invasive views of the complex internal structure of joints. This is very useful when looking at the hip for cartilage tears, joint surface loss, stress fractures and other problems.
The body has difficulty moving and reducing swelling after injury or surgery. Lymphatouch treatment delivers a ‘on-off-on-off’ suction action on the surface of the skin designed to open up the lymphatic system so that it can drain more efficiently, and so reduce swelling more quickly.
Hydrotherapy is used effectively in hip injury or following surgery to exercise with the aid of buoyancy to support the joint and reduce weight bearing during the natural healing process. It complements the Alter G well due to its ability to offer an environment with reduced weight bearing but also allows for more dynamic and functional exercise.
This provides a level of physiotherapy previously available only to elite athletes. By tailoring rehabilitation to the individual patient, the program promotes the fastest, most effective return to normal hip function, including sport and leisure activities.
